Spotlight On: Kirven Douthit-Boyd

Tell us a little about yourself!
I’m a former dancer. I trained in Boston and New York before joining the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black history is American history. It is almost impossible to speak about staples of art and culture in this country without mentioning the many contributions of black people.

Who are some black artists (dance or non-dance) you find inspirational and why?
Judith Jamison - The ULTIMATE leader. She’s the inspiration behind my barometer for excellence.

Jean Michel Basquiat - genius artist and the right kind of rebel.

Jay-Z - “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man.”

Ashton Edwards - fabulous young artist! Brilliantly dismantling ideas of gender norms in ballet.

Beyoncé - She’s Beyoncé

Antonio Douthit-Boyd - Incredible artist and educator. One of the finest works of art to ever grace world stages.
